When a large scheme collapses and authorities move in, assets are often seized or a court appoints a receiver to gather up what is left. Money then comes back to victims through a distribution process rather than through a bank dispute. It is slow — commonly years — but it is real, and it is the one route that still works long after every other deadline has passed.
How it unfolds
- Enforcement action. A regulator or prosecutor brings a case, and assets get frozen or forfeited.
- A receiver or administrator is appointed to take control of assets and identify creditors and victims.
- A claims process opens, usually with a hard deadline and a specific form, sometimes requiring proof of each payment.
- Claims are adjudicated — accepted, reduced or rejected.
- Distribution, often pro rata, and often in tranches over several years.
What you will actually get
Be prepared for a fraction. Recovered assets are typically a small share of what was taken, and costs come out first. Pro rata distributions of a few cents on the dollar are common; occasionally it is much better. It is still money, and it arrives when you had stopped expecting any.
The deadline is the thing that catches people
Claims processes close. Miss the bar date and your claim is generally gone, regardless of how strong it was. Notices go out by publication and to known victims — which is the practical argument for having reported and for keeping your contact details current. If you filed a claim with us, we monitor for processes affecting operations on our records and will tell you when one opens.
Documents to keep indefinitely
A distribution process may ask you to prove payments you made years earlier. Keep your bank and card statements, crypto transaction hashes, correspondence, account statements from the platform, and your police report reference. Do not let them go when you change banks or replace a phone.
One warning
Announced distributions attract impersonators. Fake "receiver" and "class action administrator" emails, asking for a fee or for your wallet's seed phrase to "verify eligibility", follow every major collapse. A genuine receiver never asks for a fee to process your claim and never needs your private key or seed phrase. Verify any approach against the official case page before answering it.
